welcome new students!
In welcoming summer, we have also welcomed a new batch of students to our School For Dog Trainers! Class 48 began their dog training journey on July 2, 2018! As they all gathered in the classroom on that first, highly anticipated day, excitement could easily be felt in the atmosphere. The staff of Highland Canine Training introduced themselves then turned the attention over to the class. Each student had a turn introducing themselves and explaining what had brought them to this School For Dog Trainers. Many have dreams of becoming a detection dog trainer and offering their trained dogs to law enforcement back in their hometowns. Others see a calling in rescue work, someday providing their own nonprofit organization to help homeless dogs and cats everywhere. Regardless of what passion brought each individual here, they all have one thing in common: a love for dogs and the need to learn more.
The large majority of Class 48 consists of students enrolled in our six month Master Trainer Program, while a couple of others enrolled in the 12-week Obedience and Behavior Modification Professionals Course. The Master Trainer Program is an intensive 6 month course that includes instruction and practical application in all areas of dog training including Search and Rescue, Obedience and Behavior Modification, Bitework and Apprehension, Detection, Service Dog Training, and more. The 12-week Obedience and Behavior Modification Professionals Course focuses on all aspects of pet dog training including on and off leash obedience, assessment and modification of behavior problems, trick training, dog sports, and more. Regardless of their respective course, the students of Class 48 will all gain invaluable knowledge and skills to boost them into the dog training industry.
exciting opportunities are just around the corner
Today marks the beginning of an exciting third week. So many events are taking place at Highland and this group is off to an incredible start. Currently, Highland Canine Training is hosting a Police K9 Handler’s Course for police officers learning to handle their recently purchased patrol dogs. This gives the students in the Master Trainer Program an opportunity to take part in the training scenarios of the handler’s course and learn alongside the officers. Students have also been working with their first assigned dog and are working toward their very first practical test: on-leash obedience. To begin, students must understand the basics so the first practical test will be teaching their assigned dogs basic obedience commands such as sit, down, heel, come, stay, and place. Not only will the students need to teach their dogs these behaviors, they will also need to effectively communicate the theories behind what they’re doing and “teach” their instructors how to begin training these behaviors. Many more exciting events will be taking place over the coming weeks so be sure to check in regularly!
